The Difference Between Sleet & Freezing Rain

Sleet forms when frozen precipitation approaches a shallow area of warm air, then quickly refreezes, turning into sleet. The sleet hits the ground, bouncing off of surfaces.

However, freezing rain forms when frozen precipitation approaches a larger area of warm air. The precipitation type remains rainfall until it hits that surface that's <32*F.
